Born in Tehran but raised in the U.S., Ali Banisadr (born 1976) once remarked that his childhood memories, particularly of the Islamic revolution, were a mix of recognizable and abstract images. The recent works in this catalogue, inspired by the art of the Persian miniature, similarly swarm with characters that oscillate between abstract and figurative.

The fantastical landscapes of Iranian-born painter Ali Banisadr (born 1976) are informed by his experiences as a war refugee. Fusing his own recollections with Persian mythology, the artist creates anarchical scenes of carnage amplified by rich colorful abstraction. Banisadr's lush compositions suggest Hieronymus Bosch, while his fractured imagery evokes the shock of trauma.
