Celebrate 60 years of Gerald Holtom's Peace Symbol with 'Jim Marshall: Peace'

Today marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Peace Symbol, designed on February 21, 1958, by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. What better way to celebrate than with Peace, Reel Art Press’s quietly inspiring collection of music photographer Jim Marshall’s previously unpublished photographs of the stealth-hippie insignia in action throughout America and the UK, 1961 – 1968. Whether scrawled or spray-painted on walls, subway cars, sidewalks or public monuments as scruffy graffiti, worn on armbands, printed on pins, designed as jewelry, or carried on protest posters, the Peace Sign was a symbol in action, “a beacon of belonging; of shared goals and ideals; of utopian optimism amidst political turmoil,” in the words of essayist Peter Doggett. Featured image is from the Women's Vietnam Day Committee March, San Francisco to Oakland, 1965.
