‘Ah, Malick’s here! The photographer’s arrived.’

“I would be in my studio until ten or eleven at night, because the nightlife started late. Then I would go off to the clubs with my bike, until five in the morning! I could cover five parties all at once, especially on Saturdays and during the holidays. Young people trusted me, they were with me, on my side. Garrincha and I were invited everywhere. People said that if we were at a party, it gave it prestige. I would let people know I had arrived by letting off my flash, people made way to let me in, and everyone was happy. You could feel the temperature rise right away, and the atmosphere would heat up. I would circulate among the people dancing, taking several quick photos. People would say: ‘Ah, Malick’s here! The photographer’s arrived.’” – Malick Sidibé, excerpted from Mali Twist
