Art Green: Certain Subjects

"Circumstantial Evidence" (1977) is reproduced from Certain Subjects, Garth Greenan Gallery's new monograph on Art Green, one of the key members of the Chicago Imagist Hairy Who group. Essayist John Yau concludes, "Conscious of both the beauty and monstrousness of reality, of the illusions and deceptions embedded throughout experience, Green refuses to end his inquiry into the nature of perception. It is a refusal born out of a stubborn belief in the possibilities of painting, however damaged or scorned its status. It is a refusal that, to me, seems absolutely essential."
