The Christo InterviewsThe Christo Interviews

Published by HENI Publishing.
By Hans Ulrich Obrist.

This volume gathers a series of conversations between Christo (1935–2020) and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, occurring between December 2012 and May 2020. They track the progress of The London Mastaba (2016–18), Christo’s first major public outdoor work in the UK, which coincided with an exhibition at Serpentine Galleries outlining Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 60-year history of working with oil barrels. Illustrated with images of finished works, drawings and documentary photographs from throughout Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s long and successful career, this hardback reader features previously unpublished material; the final conversation in the book was Christo’s last ever interview, recorded shortly before his death.
Hans Ulrich Obrist (born 1968) is artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. He is the creator of The Interview Project, in which he holds lengthy and revealing conversations with artists.

Conversations in ColombiaConversations in Colombia

ANAÑAM-YOH-REYA

Published by La Oficina del Doctor.
Edited by Karen Marta. Text by Beatriz González, Mateo López, Bernardo Ortiz, Gabriel Sierra, Hans Ulrich Obrist, José Antonio Suárez Londoño, et al.

A series of conversations held in 2011 with artists, filmmakers, writers and even the former mayor of Bogotá serendipitously turned into a mapping of the artistic landscape in Colombia's art scene just as it is exploding internationally. This volume is a collaborative event: artists Beatriz González, Mateo López, Bernardo Ortiz, Gabriel Sierra and José Antonio Suárez Londoño worked closely with Hans Ulrich Obrist on the naming, design and rendering of this journey into a book. The 17 interviews published here invite the reader to join Obrist's ongoing conversation about Colombia. Interviewees include Álvaro Barrios, María Fernanda Cardoso, Antonio Caro, Danilo Dueñas, Beatriz González, Mateo López, María Angélica Medina, Jorge Orlando Melo, Antanas Mockus, Oscar Muñoz, Bernardo Ortiz, Luis Ospina, María Isabel Rueda, Gabriel Sierra, Doris Salcedo, José Antonio Suárez Londoño and Juan Gabriel Vásquez.

Hans Ulrich Obrist: Conversations in MexicoHans Ulrich Obrist: Conversations in Mexico

Published by Fundación Alumnos47Cosentino.
Edited by Karen Marta. Text by Patrick Charpenel, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, Teodoro González de León, Graciela Iturbide, Esquivel!, Santiago Genovés, Carlos Fuentes, Margo Glantz, Elena Poniatowska, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Leonora Carrington, Felipe Ehrenberg, Pedro Friedeberg, Juan Soriano and Eduardo Terrazas

In 2002 Hans Ulrich Obrist began his conversation with a diverse and influential group of Mexican pioneers during an exhibition at Luis Barragán's house in Mexico City. Over a decade in the making, Conversations in Mexico beautifully captures how the Mexican cultural scene has pivoted several times--perhaps most importantly around the student protests at the 1968 Olympic Games--to cultivate a wholly radical and innovative aesthetic, one that is illuminated in the iconic buildings of Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Teodoro González de León; the people and landscapes photographed by Graciela Iturbide; the music of Esquivel!; the incredible voyages of Santiago Genovés; the utopian politics and literature of Carlos Fuentes, Margo Glantz and Elena Poniatowska; the singular vision of Alejandro Jodorowsky; and the uncompromising art of Leonora Carrington, Felipe Ehrenberg, Pedro Friedeberg, Juan Soriano and Eduardo Terrazas.

Hans Ulrich Obrist: The Czech FilesHans Ulrich Obrist: The Czech Files

Published by JRP|Ringier.
Edited by Lionel Bovier, Vít Havránek, Hans Ulrich Obrist. Text by Milan Grygar, Ivan Kafka, Stanislav Kolíbal, Jirí Kovanda, Martin Machovec, Karel Malich, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Zdenek Sykora, Jirí Valoch.

This publication is the result of visits carried out by Hans Ulrich Obrist to artists' studios in Prague around 2001 and 2008. Interviews with Milan Grygar, Jirí Kovanda, Karel Malich, Zdenek Sykora and others map the historical events as well as the personal stories of the protagonists of the Czech "second avant-garde" and the "neo-modernism" of the former socialist bloc. Born between 1920 and 1945, this generation lived through the cultural upheaval of the Prague Spring in the 1960s and the "normalization" of the 1970s, when censorship was reintroduced. These interviews contextualize a generation of Czech artists within the historical events that marked their lives and careers, and draw attention to their urgently felt need to resist historical events while keeping their artistic practices sustained, radical and vital. This volume is part of the Documents series of critical writings.

Hans Ulrich Obrist: Think Like CloudsHans Ulrich Obrist: Think Like Clouds

Published by Badlands Unlimited.
Introduction by Paul Chan. Text by Michael Diers.

Think Like Clouds collects for the first time the drawings, notes and diagrams of curator, writer and Serpentine Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist. For the past 22 years, Obrist has curated exhibitions around the world and has interviewed major and minor personalities in nearly every field of endeavor; from architect Rem Koolhaas to painter Gerhard Richter; from astronomer Dimitar Sasselov to journalist and activist Studs Turkel. Obrist draws obsessively during his work in order to help him remember and expand the conversation at hand. But these drawings are more than mere memory aids. Beautiful and enigmatic, they reveal, upon closer scrutiny, constellations of names, ideas, dates, quotes and loose bits of information entangled in wavering lines and undulating scribbles. Each drawing is a conceptual portrait of a conversation or an event. Taken as a whole, they map in visual form the intellectual and historical terrain of one of the most active and curious minds in contemporary art today. Think Like Clouds includes an introduction by scholar and archivist Michael Diers and an interview with Obrist conducted by artist Paul Chan.

Hans Ulrich Obrist: The Future Will Be... The China EditionHans Ulrich Obrist: The Future Will Be... The China Edition

Thoughts about What’s to Come

Published by Pinacoteca Agnelli/UCCA.

Internationally celebrated Swiss curator and cultural mastermind Hans Ulrich Obrist never looks back. Since 2005, he has asked artists, architects, scientists, actors and philosophers the world over to fill in the blank for what’s to come. Now, he turns to China to further his ongoing speculative narrative. In this elfin-size, bilingual (English/Chinese) volume, people active in Chinese culture tell Obrist what they think the future will be. Co-published with the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, this is the first installment of a new series published by Pinacoteca Giovanni and Marella Agnelli. Participants include A Yi, Nadim Abbas, Ai Weiwei, Daniel A. Bell, Cao Fei, Yung Ho Chang, Chen Jiaying, Chen Xiaoyun, Chen Man, Chen Wei, Cheng Ran, Cheng Wenhao, Chi Huisheng, Heman Chong, Chu Yun, Ding Yi, Duan Jianyu, Fang Lu, Gao Lei, Gao Weigang, Ge Lei, Frank Gehry, Gu Dexin and many others.
