In Kerber's beautiful new monograph, Philip-Lorca diCorcia is quoted in conversation with Christoph Ribbat: "Sometimes photography gets maligned as being too specific, too literal. But I think it’s a little like putting a bunch of little kids in a room and telling them to explain the same image. They’ll all come up with something different. The problem, simply stated, is: how do you make something that has a half-life that is longer than yours? So you’re sitting with something, living with something, looking at something, and it doesn’t give itself up that quickly. And maybe never will. I think that’s the big challenge. And it’s especially difficult in a medium as literal as photography. But it’s kind of worth the hassle… sometimes."
