Please visit ARTBOOK @ MoMA P.S.1 | | | ARTBOOK @ XLocated in the famous West 22nd Street loft building that housed the experimental New York City curatorial organization, X Initiative, from March 2009 through February, 2010, ARTBOOK @ X was an event-driven art bookstore that reached thousands during the course of its nine-month existence. Launched at the invitation of X Initiative in May of 2009, ARTBOOK @ X offered a comprehensive and sophisticated selection of books, DVDs, CDs and ephemera related to then-current, recent and upcoming shows in the neighborhood, around New York and at important international venues. The store also specialized in critical theory from rising and established writers and curators around the world, and studies of important contemporary groups and trends. Special offers changed regularly, and curated sections--such as "Young at Heart" (children's books), "On Paper" (books about books), "The Art Industry" (critical writing on the art world) and "Good Reads" (literature, general interest)--chimed with the cross-disciplinary, cross-category approach adopted by X. Additionally, the store featured dozens of artists' books consigned directly by artists.
Throughout its existence, ARTBOOK @ X hosted lectures, readings, signings and performances by artists like Marilyn Minter, Fritz Haeg and Aura Rosenberg, curators such as Hans Ulrich Obrist, writers like Eileen Myles, Rebecca Solnit and John Ashbery, and even book makers such as Pietro Corraini and Esther Smith. Through social media like Facebook, Twitter and old-fashioned email, ARTBOOK @ X reached targeted audiences for these eclectic yet high-powered events, connecting the neighborhood and the creative community of X Initiative with the world beyond.
