Published by Kant

Viktor Kolár is the Czech Republic's most important urban photographer, and is especially famed for his photo-chronicles of his hometown of Ostrava. Kolár brings a politicized existentialism to the "decisive moment" principle, recording traces of civic alienation and anthropologically telling scenarios. Kolár is the only Czech photographer to have received the Mother Jones International Photography Award (1991).

Essay by Jiri Cieslar.
Published by Torst

A native of the coal and steel town of Ostrava, Czech Republic, Viktor Kolar has been taking photographs of his hometown ever since he was a boy. Strangely rough and ready, an enthrallingly awful town, it is his whole world, the place where he searches for universal themes, for men and women's ability to survive in grueling conditions, and, since 1989, for signs of the new freedom that has turned life inside out.
