Published by La Fábrica.
Text by Juan Manuel Bonet. Interview by Juan Álvarez Márquez.

This hardcover volume presents more than 100 images from a unique part of German-born French photographer Gisèle Freund's (1908–2000) oeuvre: her portraits of Spanish and Latin American personalities, intellectuals, writers and artists. These photographs follow Freund's life journey, from her beginnings in Paris, through her period of exile in Argentina, her stays in Uruguay, Chile and Mexico, to her final stage back in Europe. During her time in these places, Freund took photographs of important personalities such as Julio Cortázar, Pablo Neruda, Nicolás Guillén, Octavio Paz, Alejo Carpentier, Vicente Huidobro, Jorge Luis Borges, Norah Borges, Guillermo de Torre, Eva Perón, Victoria Ocampo, Angélica Ocampo, María Rosa Oliver, Joaquín Torres García, Roberto Matta, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, among others. Alongside these portraits are her photographs of the Latin American landscape.

Carnets de Gisèle FreundCarnets de Gisèle Freund

Published by Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Grand Palais.

As this beautiful volume testifies, the life of Gisele Freund (1908–2000) was populated by a glamorous cast of characters. Famed for her documentary photographs of 1930s Britain and Germany on the brink of Nazism, Freund spent most of her life in Paris, where she relocated in 1933, and where she haunted the Saint-Germain-des-Près neighbourhood--in particular the legendary bookstore Shakespeare and Company. It was there that she began to make hundreds of now classic portraits of artists and writers, among them James Joyce, Henry Miller, Virginia Woolf, Jean-Paul Sartre, Henri Michaux, André Breton, Walter Benjamin, Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. This meticulously designed facsimile is made of two scrapbooks, made by Freund, that collect her favorite portraits. The first reproduces full-bleed, black-and-white portraits en face with her typed notes; the second, bound with a red ribbon, contains 116 spot-varnished color photographs with Freund's handwritten captions.
