Inspired by Italo Calvino’s classic novella Invisible Cities, Karin van Dam’s (born 1959) latest monograph details a fantastical journey through the artist’s imagination. The publication coincides with an exhibition in The Hague’s Gemeentemuseum in which overwhelming, room-filling installations depict a chaotic and captivating universe composed of pipes, balloons and rubber sheets.

Cry Out for Joy, You Lower Parts of the Earth is published on the occasion of Karin van Dam's 2005 exhibition, Van Doesburg/Van Dam, at the Central Museum in Utrecht. At the center of this show is Van Dam's critically acclaimed work, Trading Cities (on which the artist worked for nine years). Trading Cities is a collection of assemblages that creates the impression an imaginary city. Van Dam placed this work next to gouaches and pencil drawings of Dutch avant-garde artist, Theo van Doesberg in order to highlight the link between her work and his in the way they both explore space, and create layers from complex collages.
