| In Family Mini-Series, art historian Katy Siegel asks Yvonne Puffer what role modesty plays in the artist's scale and media. Puffer replies, "It made sense that the intimacy of the subject matter was better illustrated by a smaller size. It forces the viewer to come up close, to examine. The modesty of the work is intentional in the belief that simplicity is direct and honest."
Featured work, Izzy #13, a 2012 graphite and acrylic work on wood panel, is by Yvonne Puffer. | | Artwork by Yvonne Puffer. Text by Katy Siegel. Published by D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, Inc.This small volume collects 25 evocative, ghostly, graphite and acrylic works on panel by New York artist Yvonne Puffer. In an interview with art historian Katy Siegel, Puffer cites influences like Ida Applebroog, Peggy Preheim, Alice Neel and Louise Bourgeois. "Bourgeois is probably the most important for me, since she openly talks about her primal family structure's influence, yet the work doesn't need this information to exert its incredible emotional impact. Bourgeois quite often uses everyday objects in her work that evoke a time and place yet always with a discordant note. There's a mystery, haunting and fragile, that makes you a little uncomfortable, but you're not sure why. That's what I like."
