Text by Bruno Duarte, Matthias Flügge.

Since 1998, German artist Mark Lammert (born 1960) has worked in increasingly small formats, abandoning the stretcher frame but not the canvas, producing abstract paintings that tend towards landscape. His colorful coal and graphite drawings are also included in this survey.

Mark Lammert: WorkbooksMark Lammert: Workbooks

Published by Richter Verlag.
Essays by Knut Ebling and Carolin Meister. Interview by Michael Freitag.

Since 1983, when he was 23, the graphic artist, etcher, painter, and stage designer Mark Lammert has been producing rough-linen-bound books tracking the development of his themes and his conceptual sketches. The compilation of handwritten texts from varied sources written into the same pages creates an interlocking aesthetic structure. Today he has nearly 60 of these volumes, and the narrative of each contributes to a large scale reproduction of his creative process and its logistics; the provisional, the fragmentary and then the explicit; the research, its distillation and then its transformation; the handwritten, the drawn and then the painted; the invisible made visible.
