"Like every authentic oeuvre, the work of James Hyde has developed by threading its way around his various generic models. This has given rise to distinct instances; discrete works that mark an invisible totality, like a constellation of fragments that become visible against a dark night. Are these instances composed of elements of painting, sculpture, or are they the traces of an activity that is not yet defined. It is difficult to say. Each of these clusters of works can be marked by naming its type, each suggesting a common theme of possible interpretation."
