Published by Charta

Intrigued by the Mappa di Bedolina, a famous Valcamonica rock painting, Franca Ghitti undertook the creation of imaginary and poetic topologies. Using different pieces of wood juxtaposed with iron, sand and carpenters' scraps, she copied the prehistoric model of the rock painting, inspired in part by the title of an article by Italo Calvino.

Franca Ghitti: Other Alphabets

Essays by Claudio Cerritelli and Franca Ghitti.
Published by Charta

Inspired by her contact with Kenyan tribal cultures while working for the Italian Foreign Office, Franca Ghitti thinks of sculpture as an alphabet that attempts to mend lost forms of communication. Her sculptural gestures reassemble scattered elements into a sort of discourse, as if they were fragmented words; her installations transform geometric space into historical space, deposit and archive.
