Yayoi Kusama: Give Me Love

"Yayoi Kusama is an artist who has a peculiar mental disease," Japanese poet Akira Tatehata writes in David Zwirner Books' gorgeous new monograph. "It could be said that Kusama's creativity was a salvation from the fear and desperation which accompanied her mental health problems. Even though the lack of understanding from people around her caused her to feel lonely at times, her indomitable, energetic spirit never failed her. Kusama's true greatness lies in her earnest wish to connect her own sense of salvation from the depths of loneliness, to a wish for universal love in the world. Her deepest prayers beg salvation for herself and that of mankind. At times, Kusama is a loveable narcissist, declaring 'I love myself,' then she seems to be an angel with a message to the world, 'Love Forever.'" Featured here are two spreads from the book with installation shots of Kusama's ongoing interactive project, "The Obliteration Room" (2002-present), which invites visitors to add colorful circular stickers to the interior of an all-white house mounted within the gallery.
