David Bowie: Any Day NowDavid Bowie: Any Day Now

The London Years 1947-1974

Published by Adelita.
Foreword by Kenneth Pitt. Text by Kevin Cann.

David Bowie first came to notice with the 1969 song "Space Oddity," after which he promptly vanished from the public eye, immersing himself in a long period of musical experimentation and reemerging in 1972 as the glam rock androgyne Ziggy Stardust. Under this persona Bowie launched the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, spearheaded by the hit single "Starman." The late 60s and early 70s were an incredibly formative and fertile period for Bowie. Any Day Now provides the most detailed account of Bowie's early years ever published, with a wealth of new biographical information, interviews, memorabilia plus rare and unseen portraits from photographers including Terry O'Neill, Ray Stevenson, Geoff MacCormack, David Bebbington, Jak Kilby and Bob Solly. Proceeding year by year--and even day by day, as Bowie's career takes off and goes stellar--it tracks the rock legend's career from his birth in London in 1947 to the height of his success in 1974 with the release of his album Diamond Dogs and his departure from the UK. For hardcore Bowie fans, Any Day Now also includes the most concise listing of early Bowie performances ever published. Author Kevin Cann, who has worked on reissues of Bowie's back catalogue, unravels many of the myths that have surrounded the early career of one of rock's most influential figures, in this encyclopedic illustrated book. Kenneth Pitt, Bowie's manager during these years (1967-1970), contributes a foreword.
Kevin Cann published his first book on Bowie (David Bowie: A Chronology) in 1983. In 1995 he worked as Bowie's assistant on his first solo exhibition in London, and in 1999 he researched and coordinated the reissue of Bowie's back catalogue with EMI. Cann has also worked as consultant on Bowie and Mick Rock's Moonage Daydream (2002) and Geoff MacCormack's Station To Station (2007).

The Beautiful & The DamnedThe Beautiful & The Damned

Punk Photographs by Ann Summa

Published by Foggy Notion Books/Smart Art Press.
Edited by Kristine McKenna. Foreword by Exene Cervenka.

When photographer Ann Summa arrived in Los Angeles in 1978, the city’s punk scene was still fresh, diverse, smart, utterly original—and fertile territory for a young photographer. The Beautiful & the Damned is a collection of her portraits of the musicians, artists and fans who made Los Angeles such a crucial part of the history of punk. Taken between 1978 and 1984, the images mostly revolve around L.A.’s first punk generation, and include portraits of the Germs, the Screamers, X, the Cramps and the Gun Club, among many others. From there, the book expands its scope to accommodate the cross-pollination that took place between L.A.’s punk scene and the fine art community, (at the time, the audience for avant-garde artists such as the Kipper Kids, Johanna Went and Laurie Anderson was primarily drawn from the underground music scene), and the two other cities—London and New York—that played a central role in the birthing of punk. Photographed during their first U.S. tours are U.K. groups the Clash, Magazine, the Fall, the Slits, Bow Wow Wow and the Pretenders, among others. Visiting dignitaries from New York include Television, James Chance, Lydia Lunch and Talking Heads. Also included are portraits of artists who served as an inspiration to L.A. punks—Captain Beefheart, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, among others—plus candid shots of unidentified audience members. Edited and with an introduction by Kristine McKenna, The Beautiful & The Damned includes 95 previously unpublished images.
Ann Summa studied photography in Japan. Her work has been regularly published for the past 30 years in publications including Artnews, Rolling Stone and The Los Angeles Times.

Feed-Back: The Velvet Undergound: Legend, TruthFeed-Back: The Velvet Undergound: Legend, Truth

Feed-Back

Published by Ignacio Julià.
Edited by Ignacio Julià.

Only five thousand people ever bought a Velvet Underground album, Brian Eno once said, "but every single one of them started a band." Of course, well in excess of that oddly low number of copies of the VU's roiling, era-defining records have been sold in the more than 45 years since Lou Reed first swaggered up to a microphone in New York City in the mid-1960s. But the gist of Eno's observation rings true: it cannot be denied that the Velvet Underground--sardonic and loud, intense and cool, and legendarily influential--occupies a nonpareil status in the history of rock, art and art-rock. Ignacio Julià, the creator of The Velvet Underground: Legend, Truth first saw Lou Reed play in 1975 in Barcelona. The concert had a life-changing effect on him, but rather than start a band, Julià proceeded to follow the band's career, interviewing the members over the years, and publishing the first edition of this volume in 1986. This reissue of Julià's long-unavailable book has grown into this revised and expanded edition, packed with rare pictures and memorabilia, and including exclusive interviews with Lou Reed, John Cale, Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, Nico and the longest interview ever granted by Sterling Morrison.

Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol.1Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol.1

Published by Nieves.
Artwork by Kim Gordon.

This artist's book is best summed up in Kim Gordon's own words: “Basically what the book consists of is a loopy text of me having a conversation with someone named Julia about Dylan's book Chronicles, at a Strokes gig. It's supposed to seem like an excerpt out of a novel. The text is short, only just over a couple pages. The rest [of the book consists of] pics of me from over the [years]. And the book is titled Chronicles Vol. 1.”

Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol. 2Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol. 2

Published by Nieves.
Artwork by Kim Gordon.

In Chronicles Vol. 2, Kim Gordon brings together some of her most personal drawings from recent years--drawings that she made for her daughter, Coko, for her nieces, for her partner Thurston Moore, and friends. This second book of Gordon's work from Nieves goes beyond the photographic glimpses of Gordon the musician, which were pictured in Chronicles Vol. 1, providing the reader access to her most intimate world. This volume features drawings, collages and paintings, most of which have never before been published.

Touchable SoundTouchable Sound

A Collection of 7-inch Records from the USA

Published by Soundscreen Design.
Edited by Brian Roettinger, Mike Treff, Diego Hadis. Introduction by Henry Owings.

In an era that advocates streamlined product and music at the click of a mouse, Touchable Sound celebrates those independent-spirited bands and musicians who make their own records, relishing the opportunity to produce labor-intensive one-off artifacts with no prospect of remuneration. As Henry H. Owings puts it in his introduction, it is a book that "honors those that invest countless hours to further their art... It's about having an attention to detail and a disinterest in the bottom line." Curated by Brian Roettinger, Michael Treff and Diego Hadis, and organized by region across the U.S., Touchable Sound focuses on rare, labor-intensive, exquisite and unique examples of American seven-inch record design spanning nearly 25 years, lovingly documenting the obscure and the hard-to-find with the help of musicians, artists and designers. Many of these records--by bands such as Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Chromatics, Fast Forward, Nuzzle, Gogogo Airheart, Young Ginns, Men's Recovery Project, Angel Hair, Universal Order--have never previously been seen by a wide audience and were originally pressed in extremely limited runs. Editorial contributors include Henry Owings (Drug Racer Records, Chunklet magazine), Sam McPheeters (Vermiform Records), Tom Hazelmyer (Amphetamine Reptile Records), Kristin Thompson (Simple Machines Records) and more. Designed by Brian Roettinger, the book contains photographs of every record documented.

What Sound Does A Color Make? What Sound Does A Color Make?

Published by Independent Curators International (ICI).
Essay by Kathleen Forde. Foreword by Judith Richards. Interviews with Naut Humon and Steina Vasulka.

Synesthesia is the condition where stimulation of one sense (aural, for instance) triggers another (visual), so hearing a G minor chord might literally make you see red. This rare natural phenomenon seems less anomalous in our digital age, where all electronic media, whether sounds or moving images, are coded into the zeros and ones of computer bits. What Sound Does a Color Make? explores the fusion of vision and sound in electronic media, and connects the recent boom of digital, audiovisual art to its predigital roots by presenting 10 contemporary works along with a selection of single-channel videos from the 1970s by a diverse group of international artists. The earlier works, by such pioneers of video art as Nam June Paik, Steina Vasulka and Gary Hill, place the current interest in synesthetic media art in a broader historical context, offering a unique perspective on this bending of human perception and cognition. Younger artists, such as D-Fuse and Jim Campbell, offer environments and installations that will make you hear the blues.

Varieties of Audio MimesisVarieties of Audio Mimesis

Published by Errant Bodies Press.
By Allen S. Weiss.

This investigation of the metaphoric relationship between music and landscape is also a study of the poetics of onomatopoeia and a theory of sound in the arts. The history of European musicology is perennially revised around the debate about whether music is a representational or an abstract art. This discussion may be extended to all of the sound arts, and to language itself. Thus the phenomenon of onomatopoeia is emblematic of what might be seen as the ontological aporia of sound art: mimesis is simultaneously a loss and a gain, placing representation on uneven ground where the signified loses structural integrity and existential verifiability, while the signifier gains in complexity and ambiguity. Through literary, performative and sonic analysis, this book investigates audiophonic representation, proposes a unified field theory of the sound arts; offers descriptive possibilities for audio productions; and looks at audio mimesis in relation to gardens and landscape.

Moby: DestroyedMoby: Destroyed

Published by Damiani.

Like no other music of its era, Moby's oceanic, bluesy electronica has summed up the millennial turn's rootless melancholia, in massive worldwide hits like "Porcelain," "Natural Blues" and "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" His 1999 album Play sold over ten million copies and converted a whole generation to electronic dance music. With Destroyed, Moby has created a visual analogue to his gorgeous soundworld. The photographs in this volume record the sizeable portion of his life that is spent shuttling from plane to bus to venue to stage to party to hotel room to oblivion. "I hope that somehow in these pictures," Moby writes, "I'm able to convey the mundanity of touring, juxtaposed with those moments of the strange and/or sublime. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless airport, the next minute you're flying over the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. One minute on tour you're by yourself in a soulless backstage area, the next minute you're on stage pouring your heart out to 75,000 people. Touring is all contrasts and strangeness, and that's what I'm trying to convey in these pictures." The 60 photographs in Moby: Destroyed accordingly veer from crowdedness to isolation, capturing the extremes of a life lived on the road. Also included is Moby's new album of the same name.
Richard Hall, aka Moby, was born in Harlem, New York City, in 1965. Having studied classical guitar, piano and drums as a child, and after stints in various punk bands, he debuted in the early 1990s alongside Orbital, The Prodigy and Aphex Twin, as a representative of a new generation in electronica, emerging from Ambient House and Techno, and foreshadowing Trip Hop. Moby's bestselling 1999 album Play propelled him to worldwide fame; its successor, 18 (2002), earned gold and platinum awards in over 30 countries. Already famous for his veganism, Moby made his authorial debut in March 2010 as a contributor to Gristle: From Factory Farms to Food Safety, a collection of essays on the dangers of eating meat.
