This volume examines 20 such regions in detail, discussing the evolution of each--whether due to natural or manmade changes--while also considering traditional notions associated with the landscape, such as beauty and the sublime. Further, with a nod to contemporary environmental concerns, this publication broaches difficult questions. For example, can we protect these landscapes from further transformation? To what extent are physical changes acceptable? And is it possible to properly integrate them? The volume also includes an insightful text by writer and conservationist, Peter Fowler.
