40 : Love

40 Years of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Edited by Markus Günthardt. Text by Elmar Brümmer.

Featured image is reproduced from '40 : Love.'Drawing on a wealth of archival material including photographs, posters and catalogs, this book celebrates 40 years of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the longest-running women’s indoor tournament in Europe and since 2013 a premier tournament on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour.
With an emphasis on visual staging in its graphic design, 40 : Love is no average jubilee book but a sleek, intricate scrapbook exploring the stories of the players who defined a new era of women’s tennis—including Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber. This is an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the history of the tournament, the characters of its champions both on and off the court, and the design development of its principal sponsor, Porsche, over the course of four decades.

A 13-year-old star is born at the 1982 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

A 13-year-old star is born at the 1982 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Today we celebrate Fashion Week and the finale of the 2017 US Open with this 1982 photograph of 13-year-old Steffi Graf playing in her first Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Filderstadt, Germany. Reproduced from 40 : Love, Steidl’s over-the-top, 368-page tribute to the Porsche Grand Prix, this image represents one of the world's most important women’s tennis tournaments on its fortieth anniversary. “Dwarfed by the world elite,” the copy reads,” Graf made her world debut at this tournament. “The winner is unimpressed by Steffi, there’s hundreds like her. What a mistake.” continue to blog

Does anything look as great as 70s Women's Tennis?

Does anything look as great as 70s Women's Tennis?

“Der Star 1978.” Tracy Austin, age 15, won the first ever Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in 1978, after a thrilling final against Dutch powerhouse, Betty Stöve. The ruffled bloomers, pom-pom socks and pigtails were only a façade: Austin swept her opponents off the courts and cemented her place in a sport that was just then becoming open to women athletes on par with men. We feature this photo, reproduced from Steidl’s vivacious new visual history, 40 : Love, 40 Years of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, on the occasion of the 2017 US Open, which plays throughout this Labor Day weekend and continues until September 10. continue to blog
