Concrete Cuba: Cuban Geometric Abstraction from the 1950s

Published by David Zwirner Books

This gorgeous survey "adds to the history of postwar abstraction by providing a first glimpse of what a small group of Cuban artists were up to in the 1950s and early ’60s, the tumultuous years leading up to, and just after, the revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power." - Roberta Smith, NY Times

The development of Cuban geometric abstraction and the formation of Los Diez Pintores Concretos (Ten Concrete Painters) coincided with the radical cultural shifts that raged throughout the country in the 1950s. Against this backdrop, artists sought a new visual language in which abstract art could function as political and social practice. Concrete Cuba, produced on the occasion of the 2015–16 exhibition at David Zwirner, marks one of the first major presentations outside Cuba to focus on concretism in Cuba, and includes important works from the late 1940s through the early 1960s by the 12 artists who were associated with the group: Pedro Álvarez, Wifredo Arcay, Mario Carreño, Salvador Corratgé, Sandú Darié, Luis Martínez Pedro, Alberto Menocal, José M. Mijares, Pedro de Oraá, José Ángel Rosabal, Loló Soldevilla and Rafael Soriano.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

Artforum, Best of 2016

Grace Wales Bonner

Highlights were Sandú Darié’s playful sculpture and painting; his works’ subdued palette felt distinctively local, the deep browns, auburns, and yellows conveying a rich, earthy materiality.

Concrete Cuba: Cuban Geometric Abstraction from the 1950s

Concrete Cuba: Cuban Geometric Abstraction from the 1950sHere it is. The book you have wanted. The book you need. The book that never existed, in any form, until now. Concrete Cuba: Cuban Geometric Abstraction from the 1950s from David Zwirner Books is the first major survey of concretism in Cuba from the late 1940s through the early 1960s—the pivotal years building up to and including the Cuban Revolution. The work in this eye-opening volume—by Pedro Álvarez, Wifredo Arcay, Mario Carreño, Salvador Corratgé, Sandú Darié (whose untitled 1950s painting is reproduced here), Luis Martínez Pedro, Alberto Menocal, José M. Mijares, Pedro de Oraá, José Ángel Rosabal, Loló Soldevilla and Rafael Soriano—is every bit as revolutionary as Fidel himself. A featured title at our bookstores at Design Miami and Art Basel Miami, it is also one of our top ten Staff Favorite Holiday Gift Books, 2016. continue to blog
