DAVID ZWIRNER BOOKS

Neo Rauch: At the Well

"Hüter der Nacht" (2 0 1 4) is reproduced from Neo Rauch: At the Well.At the Well, produced to coincide with an exhibition of Neo Rauch's (born 1960) new works at David Zwirner in New York, brings together both small- and large-format paintings that expand the artist's unique iconography of eccentric figures, animals and hybrids within vaguely familiar but imaginary settings. This oversized catalogue—designed in close collaboration with the artist—is anchored by 16 stunning plates and numerous 1:1 details that give viewers intimate access to these compelling compositions. Themes of rebirth and new beginnings abound: Rauch consistently creates characters who appear to be in the process of transformation. At the Well features an essay by art historian and curator Sir Norman Rosenthal, who presents a careful reading of Rauch's new work. The book also includes a reprint of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale "The Young Giant," specifically chosen by Rosenthal to further expand his analysis.

"Hüter der Nacht" (2 0 1 4) is reproduced from Neo Rauch: At the Well.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

Modern Painters

Paul Laster

For his sixth solo outing at Zwirner since 2000...Devising parallel, metaphysical worlds--much as a filmmaker or playwright would--Rauch illustrates visual conundrums that blend memory with history in enigmatic ways.

Fever writes: "Meet Todd Bradway, after a 20-year career at ARTBOOK|D.A.P., America’s premier source for art books, Todd is now heading David Zwirner Gallery’s own publishing entity and believes print publication is on the rise once again!"

Neo Rauch: At the Well

Neo Rauch: At the Well

In Neo Rauch: At the Well, Norman Rosenthal writes, "As with Dürer and Cranach, filtered also by nineteenth-century medievalism, not to speak of the modern, Rauch’s paintings make the Germanic-strange seem normal. In paintings such as Späte Heimkehr (Late Homecoming)" (2013), pictured here, "a melancholic angel returns home as a giant, while the other family figures are in a state of alienated inwardness and perhaps prayer, but like all his characters, seem to be avoiding contact with each other. What is the metaphysical meaning of the image? The artist must have his own agenda over which the viewers can perhaps project their own fantasy and narrative." continue to blog
