|   |   | AVOCET EDITIONSBruce Kurland: Illusion and the Little WorldEdited with text by Lisa Jarnot. Text by Victoria Munroe, Eliza Rathbone.
Bruce Kurland was an American still-life painter working from the early 1960s until his death in 2013. Born in New York in 1938, Kurland was initially influenced by earlier European practitioners of the still-life genre such as Fabritius, Chardin and Morandi, whose quiet reveries he inflected with a contemporary vision of mortality derived from the visceral imagery of Francis Bacon. Today, his work can be seen as part of a singular strain of twentieth-century North American painting that includes artists such as Walter Murch and Gregory Gillespie. Kurland infused his paintings with powerful attention to, and a tangible affection for, nature "red in tooth and claw," conjuring "a little world with which I could do anything I wanted, without losing the illusion." This handsome volume, with its cloth binding and tip-on cover, includes essays by poet Lisa Jarnot, gallerist Victoria Munroe and Chief Curator at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, Eliza Rathbone.

| | | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 5/16/2014Bruce Kurland's 1975 oil painting, "Petunias," is reproduced from Illusion and the Little World, Avocet's exquisite new monograph on the artist, who died just before it was published, in 2013. In her essay, Lisa Jarnot writes, "Awe is the word that comes to mind—an awe that originated in childhood reveries on marshes in Long Island and evolved through adolescent Coast Guard duty and hunting and homesteading in upstate New York. Awe in the original sense of the word: a reverential dread and wonder. In Bruce's paintings I hear the words he spoke when we were awestruck by nimble legged shore birds, CNN's visceral Baghdad fireworks, or Francis Bacon paintings of screaming popes. 'Look at that,' he'd whisper breathlessly, and sometimes he'd add, 'It's beautiful.'" continue to blog | ART BOOKS & MUSEUM EXHIBITION CATALOGS: FORTHCOMING AND RECENT RELEASES | | D.A.P.ISBN: 9781636812991 USD $60.00 | CAN $86Pub Date: 6/18/2024 Forthcoming
