THE RULES

A game of ping pong is played up to 11 points. It used to be up to 21, but the rules changed in 2001. A match is usually the best of five games.

First you need to decide who serves. The most common method is to hide the ball in one hand, then put both hands behind your back or under the table and ask your opponent to guess which one it’s in. Alternatively you can toss a coin.

When serving, the ball is hit so that it bounces first on the server’s side and then at least once on the opponent’s side of the table.

The players get two serves each, alternating until one player scores 11 points. Players must win by two points. If both players score ten points (deuce), the service then alternates after each point until one player wins by two points.

When receiving the ball, the player must hit it after it has bounced once on their side of the table. Players cannot hit the ball before it has bounced on their side.

Players change ends after each game. The player who served first in the previous game receives first in the next.

Ping-pong is the most popular racquet sport in the world. And no wonder: it is one of the few sports that is genuinely enjoyable to play at any skill level and at any age. From the fluorescent-lit basements of the family home to the professional arena of the Olympics, it can be as relaxed or as competitive as players want it to be, while still offering all the adrenaline rush of any fast-paced sport or entertainment. No labored strategizing or belly itching: just quick instincts and the instantly recognizable click-clacking of its hypnotic rhythm. The sociable aspects of the game are today leading thousands of people to rediscover the sport, with tables popping up in all the hippest bars and workplaces. The joys and tribulations of ping-pong are beautifully illustrated in this delightful little gift book; the rules of singles and doubles games are clearly explained and tips and techniques provide readers with the crucial edge to vanquish their opponents. Photography from tournaments sits alongside classic archival imagery, bringing the book alive while paying tribute to the sport’s vintage roots. Ping Pong captures a breaking trend in a small but beautiful little volume, and is a great little gift book for young and old alike.

STAFF REVIEW

Ever wanted vanquish your opponents with the Chop, or perhaps the Smash? Maybe better to use the Flick or the Push? Well, I have just the book for you!! At only $9.95, this pocket-sized purchase is an awesome "ode to ping pong." Featuring the rules of singles and doubles games, helpful tips and techniques, photography from tournaments and amazing archival imagery, it's the perfect gift for novices and pros alike.
What started as an after-dinner parlor activity in 1880s Britain known as "wiff-waff" quickly evolved into the international sensation we now refer to as table tennis, or, more commonly, ping pong--the world's most popular racquet sport! Now, you may ask yourself: How popular is ping pong these days, anyways? Well :
-- There are tons of ping pong themed bars all around the country. In Denver there is even a huge weekly ping pong party called Smash!
--The sport has a massive celebrity following, including: Susan Sarandon, Edward Norton, Salman Rushdie, 50 Cent, and British indie band The Arctic Monkeys. There is even a magazine dedicated to celebrities who play.
--Speaking of Sarandon, the actress recently donated $75,000 to support table tennis programs in New York schools.
--Over ten million players compete in sanctioned tournaments each year.
--And according to an NBC news report from 2011, ping pong is not only good exercise but it also helps increase healthy brain function!! This book is literally good for you!Not to mention, table tennis has been an Olympic sport since 1988 and with this summer's Olympic Games in London, it's sure to gain even more popularity. -- Erin Dunigan
