Adrain Chesser: The Return

Published by Daylight Books
Text by Timothy White Eagle.

From 2006 to 2012, Seattle-based photographer Adrain Chesser (born 1965) and Native American ritualist Timothy White Eagle traveled throughout the western states of Nevada, Idaho, California and Oregon with a loose band of comrades, practicing a hunter-gatherer way of life. This bold adventure necessitated the collective rearing, killing and cooking of animals, foraging for berries, sleeping outdoors or creating shelter and surviving harsh terrain. Chesser and White Eagle’s experiment produced the body of work titled The Return, a lyrical portrait of a contemporary nomadic existence. "Give back more than you take" is a well-known tenet of early hunter-gather societies, and The Return is a complex exploration of the attempt to implement this mythic ideal as it intersects with the reality of modern life.

The Return is a collaboration between photographer Adrain Chesser and ritualist Timothy White Eagle. The aim was to create a mythic portrait of a people, a place, and an ideal, working with a coterie of fierce individuals who traveled nomadically through the western United States. They embodied the ideal of living a symbiotic relationship with the Earth, based on the ways of early Native Americans.

The Return is a collection of quiet beautiful photographs juxtaposed with preachy, strident text. Adrain Chesser's images explore a subculture of young men and women who have dropped out of asociety to embrace the lifestyle of Native Americans-or at least their romantic notions of it.

Chesser shows their struggles and contradictions. His subjects head out in their SUVs, for instance. They stop at Burger King for a meal. And Chesser cuts through utopian illusions with images of unforgiving landscapes and occasional brutality. But he's sympathetic to this subjects, and with an eye for gorgeous light, telling gesture, and detail.
