Doomsdate: 2013 Calendar

A Project by Mark Hagen

Featured spread, for the months of March and April, is reproduced from Doomsdate: 2013 Calendar.Despite its poor—that is, zero—rate of success (to date), predicting the end of the world has never ceased to be a popular sport throughout the history of humankind. If the turn of the millennium has appeared to provoke an uptick in this sport, this week- and month-at-a-glance calendar for 2013 shows that apocalypse speculation dates back at least as far as the first century AD. Compiled by artist Mark Hagen, Doomsdate provides more than 200 listings of doomsday predictions, from the writings of early Christian cults such as the Donatists to more recent lapses of sanity, such as Ronald Reagan’s observation to James Mills in 1971, regarding the Libyan revolution: “For the first time ever, everything is in place for the Battle of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ.” Bringing an improbably apocalyptic twist to the homely format of the moleskin notebook, this leatherbound calendar contains approximately 16 doomsday predictions per month, as well as a lengthy notebook section at the back.

STAFF REVIEW

The Doomsdate: 2013 Calendar is published by our neighbors at ARTBOOK West, Paper Chase Press. This month-at-a-glance style calendar comes with 200 apocalyptic predictions, such as:
On this day in 1844
Rev. Samuel S. Snow, an influential Millerite following William Miller? s lead, predicted the Second Coming of Christ for Oct 22, 1844. On that day the Millerites gathered on a hilltop to await the coming of Jesus. Afterwards, this event became known as the "Great Disappointment."
On this day in 1997
The suicides of the Heaven's Gate cult members occurred in the precise window of time that they predicted a UFO, trailing in the tail of the Comet Hale-Bopp, would collect their souls and save them from an imminent Apocalypse on Earth.
And lastly, an uplifting prediction:
On this day in the years 10 to 20 trillion, you know, give or take a millennium, if the universe's expansion is not infinite it might slow and even eventually reverse itself, causing space and time to collapse into a singularity (aka the Big Crunch). And If the Big Crunch were to be followed by another Big Bang then we might be living in one of any number of sequential parallel universes. -- Jonathan Schneider
