For many years, as the Merzbacher Collection grew, it remained a well-guarded secret--lent generously but anonymously to museums, so that only a few curators understood its importance. In October 1998, it made its debut in The Joy of Color at Jerusalem's Israel Museum, and proved to be one of the most successful exhibits ever hosted there, drawing some 250,000 people. Since then the Switzerland-based Merzbacher Collection has also shown in London, and the New York Times has called it "one of the worlds finest private holdings of modern art." This book of its treasures spans more than 100 years of art-historical development and an abundance of movements, and includes work from Max Beckmann, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Henri Matisse.
