Christine de la Garenne & Via Lewandowsky: Neobiota Fragments of Misunderstanding: Beijing ![Christine de la Garenne & Via Lewandowsky: Neobiota

Fragments of Misunderstanding: Beijing]()
Edited by Christoph Zuschlag. Essays by Durs Grnbein, Barbara Mittler and Carol Lu.
Over a recent four-month stay in Beijing, Christine de la Garenne and Via Lewandowsky made this portfolio of 120 painterly color photographs of ordinary objects and situations that felt particularly foreign to them, and situations in which they themselves felt exotic or alien. "Neobiota" is a biological term used to describe non-native species that invade a new geographical area as a result of either direct or indirect human interaction. Their arrival alters not only the environment, but also the flora itself, which must adapt to its unfamiliar surroundings. De la Garenne and Lewandowsky explore daily life in China from a foreign perspective, documenting social and urban change as well as their own adaptation to a new culture, and they see both their host city and themselves anew.
